Creating Pivot Tables on the iSeries

by Bruce Guetzkow

If you've ever used spreadsheet software, there's a good chance that you've created a pivot table. Pivot tables allow you to convert rows of data into columns of data, which may be more meaningful to the end user. Creating pivot tables on the iSeries can be a complicated process. The commands demonstrated here will greatly simplify that task.

Guide to Using XMLHttpRequest (with Baby Steps)

Although the XMLHttpRequest object might sound complex and different from any other JavaScript object you have ever used, it really isn't.

Going Independent - Part 3 - Breaking Away

"The hardest part about eating sushi for the first time is actually convincing yourself to do it. You know that lots of other people are doing it and find the experience to be tremendously rewarding, but you’re afraid that if you try it yourself, you’re going to wind up in the bathroom slung over the porcelain throne wondering what the hell you were thinking in the first place. Many developers have the same fears about cutting their corporate ties and becoming an independent contractor"

Using Excel for Graphing

Most business intelligence products I've worked with do really simplistic graphing, decorated with a lot of useless chart junk. I often find myself pulling numbers and feeding them into Excel for better manipulation and graphing. Your typical BI tool can't automatically handle some incredibly useful charts which I learned years ago in Total Quality Management training and find myself reusing every year.

One of these is Shewhart control charts. Also Pac-Man, but that comes later.

Flash Strikes Back: Creating Powerful Web Applications

There is more to data access than SQL

The number and variety of computing devices in the environment are increasing rapidly. Real computers are no longer tethered to desktops or locked in server rooms. PDAs, highly mobile tablet and laptop devices, palmtop computers, and mobile telephony handsets now offer powerful platforms for the delivery of new applications and services. These devices are, however, only the tip of the iceberg. Hidden from sight are the many computing and network elements required to support the infrastructure that makes ubiquitous computing possible

How to Stop Feeling Bad About Using Tables for Layout and Start Enjoying Your Markup

You must be really living out in the sticks if you haven't heard by now that using HTML tables for layout is bad. Markup is for content, CSS is for presentation, we learned.

You must be living in the land of magic mushrooms if you haven't realized by now that making CSS do exactly what you want is easier said than done.

See, in the ideal, happy-go-lucky world, everything is just right. The content, custom-tailored by suave professional markup writers, fits perfectly into the widths and proportions of your template. The browsers support standards at exactly the same level and in exactly the same way.

Too bad we don't live in Mayberry. With the loony Czar "The Exasperating" CSS 1.50304 ruling the presentational realm, it is surprisingly hard to build templates that are not brittle. Even The Man himself is battling with the idiosyncrasies of the dominant Web browser. And he's the sole content contributor to the site! What if the entries were written and posted by someone who neither knows nor cares about the quality of markup, which last time I checked, is the absolute majority of your typical content contributors?

Community Students Spreadsheets
http://www.cleo.net.uk/community/spreadsheet?invite=1
This community is for teachers to use with their students/pupils. It has two distinct 'audiences'.
The first is for the teacher introducing students/pupils to spreadsheet applications or developing pupils understanding of how a spreadsheet can be used.
The examples remove the need to know how to prepare a spreadsheet or start with an over-facing screen of blank cells both for teacher and student.
There are various themes available but I am very willing to develop a theme from your own idea.
Just e-mail the idea with a few details of what you hope the spreadsheet will do.
The second audience is the teacher as a classroom administrator. Several spreadsheets are designed to make those tedious tasks a little easier.

Spreadsheets - more than just number crunching
http://top.ngfl.gov.uk/content.php3?content=content/b953743223.html
One of the main benefits of my laptop has been that I can now achieve administrative asks more quickly than before. For instance, I now compose letters, governors' reports and newsletters to parents. Very important to the work of the school, however, has been our use of spreadsheets.
The spreadsheets - or 'Tracking achievement sheets' as we call them - have developed from handwritten records I had been keeping for years.

Design Patterns for AJAX Usability

AJAX holds a lot of promise for web usability, and the underlying technology has already delivered some stunning applications. But its no magic bullet. Careful design is always required, and it must be based specifically on the technology at hand. As AJAX emerges, were going to learn more about what sort of design works, and well need ways of documenting this information and talking about it. Fortunately, the evolution of this particular technology will take place at a time when design patterns are well-entrenched in the industry, and design patterns are an excellent means of knowledge representation. Thus, it makes sense to begin cataloguing AJAX design patterns. These are some thoughts based on current examples and demo systems

How many LPARs are being used?

Tips for i5 eServer Hardware Management Console

The HMC was introduced for Logical Partition support on the pSeries with the introduction of Power 4 Technology. IBM has continued the process of consolidating server hardware and the Power 5 Technology. The eServer i5 can now run i5/OS and AIX natively on the Power 5 server, as well as Linux. The HMC provides a single-control point for managing hardware and Capacity Upgrade on Demand across multiple operating systems, and eliminates the need for a 'Primary Partition' on the iSeries. What will this mean from an implementation and systems Management perspective? Recently Allyn Walsh, IBM Partner World for Developers (PWD) Technical Support, joined Search400.com for a webcast on Introduction to i5 eServer Hardware Management Console (HMC)

iSeries Gets New Features for LPAR, I/O, SQL

The worst kept secret in the world just got revealed in the U.S. on MTV

I’ve seen some comments on the size of the system. Mostly negative of course. I’ve got to repeat what I’ve said on a couple of shows. This is a very impressive bit of machinery. Microsoft haven’t hyped it nearly enough, mostly because the PS3 is more impressive. However, we’re talking about a system that would normally set you back several thousand dollars. Some high quality workgroup servers don’t even match the compute power in this, and they cost much more than the $300 to $400 it’s expected to retail for.

UNIX Shell Programming

Ken Steube
San Diego Supercomputer Center

These are the workshop notes I used to use for teaching a course on Bourne shell (sh) scripting. I haven't taught the class for some time now, but the material is all still current since the Bourne shell hasn't changed. Often you'll find that these notes are a bit short of description. This is because they were intended by be a lecture aid.
What do you need to know to follow this course? These notes were originally written as a second class in UNIX. The first class taught how to use the basic UNIX commands (like sed, grep and find) and this class teaches how to combine these tools to accomplish bigger tasks.
In addition to the material in this course you might be interested in the Korn shell (ksh) and the Bourne again shell (bash), both of which are excellent shells that enchance the original Bourne shell. These alternate shells are upwardly-compatible with the original Bourne shell, meaning that a script written for sh can run in ksh or bash. However, there are additional features in bash and ksh that are not available in the Bourne shell.
The focus of this guide is to get you to understand and run some Bourne shell scripts. On several pages there are example scripts for you to run. On most of these pages there is a link you can click on (with the right mouse button) and download the script to your computer and run it

PORTKNOCKING - A system for stealthy authentication across closed ports

Port knocking is a method of establishing a connection to a networked computer that has no open ports . Before a connection is established, ports are opened using a port knock sequence, which is a series of connection attempts to closed ports. A remote host generates and sends an authentic knock sequence in order to manipulate the server's firewall rules to open one or more specific ports. These manipulations are mediated by a port knock daemon, running on the server, which monitors the firewall log file for connection attempts which can be translated into authentic knock sequences. Once the desired ports are opened, the remote host can establish a connection and begin a session. Another knock sequence may used to trigger the closing of the port

Great project to add your MP3 player to your car (Cool MAKE Photo too!) 'Over the past couple of years I have upgraded my Pioneer Car CD changer to meet my needs. I went from a 6CD to a 12CD and now I have a portable MP3 player I want to connect. Pioneer offers an auxiliary adapter (CDRB-10) for ~$40 or an iPod adapter (CD-IB100) for ~$130. The auxiliary adapter appears to be a simple input-to-RCA-out, so I decided to make an aux adapter myself for ~$6. A quick tally of the cost of the parts listed is ~$12 bucks but you'll have plenty of wire for your future projects and an extra stereo jack"

Developing a Common Corporate Framework for your Java Applications

Developing a Common Corporate Framework for your Java Applications (timothyfisher.javadevelopersjournal.com): "In today's market, application development teams are often asked to complete applications in time frames shorter than ever before, with fewer resources, and at lower cost. This high pressure, fast-paced environment can open a door to poorly designed and implemented applications that are difficult to support and maintain. When a project has a tight schedule, one of the first practices to be jettisoned is the notion of code reuse. It is a common view that making code reusable, while important strategically, will slow down development on the current project. If this practice becomes standard throughout a company, what you end up with is a family of corporate applications that have no common infrastructure, no common design elements, multiple styles of coding and design, and hundreds of instances of solving the same set of problems repeatedly. Ten Easy Ways to Screw Up Your Computer Game Company

You've been thinking about it for years. You can't help it. You know you have what it takes. And above all, you know that the jobs which are out there, inside or outside of the gaming business, are never going to provide you with the challenges and the opportunities that you crave and deserve. So you prepare for the big day, and you wait. It isn't easy, but you save a little money, gather a team whom you believe will be able to carry a schedule, and you go into business for yourselves.
Every year, hundreds (maybe thousands) of groups of people just like you make the same decision. Some of them make it big. Most fizzle within months and are never heard from again. To you, that would be a fate worse than death. So how do you avoid it?
There are no golden paths to game development stardom, but there are many, many tempting roads leading right into the abyss. Here are just a few of them. Trespass at your own peril."

hello joseph / how i implemented tags: a de-normalized approach

hello joseph / how i implemented tags: a de-normalized approach: "There's been a lot of talk recently about how to implement tags on your own web site, and I wanted to share how I did it. By no means am I an expert code writer and my way may not be the best (it's de-normalized), and I'm sure there will be people who laugh in my general direction. That's fine -- at the very least, I hope that it will give you some ideas of how to do this on your own. I've been using this system for about three months on two web sites and it's working great (here, and brotherjoe.com). It is made with PHP and MySQL, and uses REGEX for tag matching. My system does popular tags, related tags, tag addition, and the ability to seperate tags with commas so you can have multi-word tags. Let's get started..."

Kevin Kelly -- Cool Tools

Kevin Kelly -- Cool Tools: "Cool tools really work. A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. I am chiefly interested in stuff that is extraordinary, better than similar products, little-known, and reliably useful for an individual or small group. I depend on friends and readers to suggest things they actually use. There are plenty of places to read about stuff that should be cool, or that looks new and cool, and that might be useful. These recommendations here, on the other hand, are based on people who have used this item and many similar and have come to see its superiority. Items can be old items, or cheap things that you still dote on after years of use. Great new gear, if well tested by you, are also wonderful. I post things I like and I ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted. Tell me what you love. "

Mouseover DOM Inspector v2.0

The Mouseover DOM Inspector, or MODI for short, is a favelet (also known as a bookmarklet) that allows you to view and manipulate the DOM of a web page simply by mousing around the document.
Browsers currently supported are Firefox, Mozilla, Opera 7.5+ and MSIE6+ on all of their respective Operating Systems. As of this writing, Safari does not support the sourcing of dynamically created script objects so the application does not work in that browser

Testing/debugging code on the fly in eclipse

Sometimes its useful to be able to run a piece of code to see if it does what you want without having a test case for it.
Eclipse makes this easy to do with its Scrapbook Page feature. To create a Scrapbook Page, New (Ctrl-N) -> Java -> Java Run/Debug -> Scrapbook page. This brings up an editor into which you can add snippets of java code which you can then execute by selecting them, RC->Inspect/Display/Execute
But did you know you could also debug the code you are executing from a scrapbook? Since the scrapbook actually runs the code in a jvm running in a debugger, all you have to do is set breakpoints at the locations you care about. This makes it extremely easy for one to figure out if a utility method is doing what it should (but you should really write a test case ;), or inspect the execution of some javadoc deficient thirdparty code to figure out what it actually does before you make your code depend on it

Quick and Easy Custom Templates with XDoclet

I stumbled upon templates. Templates are a way to extend the functionality of XDoclet to better match your code-generation needs. For instance, if you have a particular type of class that doesn't quite fit in with anything the XDoclet offers out of the box (in my case, these were custom controller classes), then it's fairly easy to add your own template files using XML markup only! Ideally, I just wanted to define a class with a minimal set of properties and generate not only my controller code, but additional XML that would be required by Spring. After some tweaking, I was pleased with the results

Yahoo! Video Search Goes Primetime

Great video search isn't just about content from large publishers, it's also about the long tail content from smaller publishers and individuals as well. To that end, we're indexing the Internet Archive's Moving Image Archive. One of the great things about the Moving Image Archive is that it encompasses a wide range of content -- everything from the Prelinger Archives (a collection of over 48,000 'ephemeral films' from 1927 through 1987), to user-created Open Source Movies hosted by the Internet Archive, and other collections of video. (One of my favorites is the animated legos from Brick Films. Don't miss seeing their version of Grand Theft Auto done entirely in Lego).
Those of you who are budding independent filmmakers, or think you've created the next Numa Numa Dance, we're keeping you in the fold too. Besides making enhancements to our web crawl which indexes video files published online, you can also submit a Media RSS feed directly to us of the video on your website.
If you want someone to host your video content for you as well, you can have your video hosted by sites such as OurMedia, the Internet Archive's Open Source Movies, or any other hosting service that publishes video files directly to the web or with Media RSS. We applaud these hosting efforts -- it's our goal that once you publish your video content on any hosting service, we'll index the content in Video Search and help our audience find your content. Supporting an open model for video hosting gives you the most choices, so you can find the publishing solution that works best for you

Why I do not like Apple, 2nd Edition

Mad Andys Bad Thoughts:

The publisher Wiley is going to publish a biography about Steve Jobs and it seems Apple aka Steve Jobs does not like it and pulled all the Wiley books from the Apple stores. Steve Jobs proofs, once again, that were there is a lot of light there are also many shadows. Having a 3 year old boy that looks more like child's play to me rather than grown up behavior. Most of the visionaries I know do have bad bedside manners and so Steve Jobs just fits the rule but I still do not like it and therefore I will not spend any further money on Apple products in the near future. Finally Steve helped to resolve my own battle between my dislike of Apple and the coolness factor of their products

Innovation Happens Elsewhere

The title alludes to a famous comment made by Bill Joy, to the effect that no-one can hire all the smart people so some of the innovation inevitably happens elsewhere. In the massively connected age in which we find ourselves, the only smart way to develop software is to collaborate with those people - relying only on the ones you can hire is the wrong move. To me, open source software development is the obvious approach in the massively connected age.

Software Terrorist - The Terror of Code in the Wrong Hands

He doesnt tell anybody what hes done, and he never tests. Hes created a ticking time bomb that wont be discovered for six months"

Wow! Bill Gates Doesn't Get It! Again! (And that's a good thing!)

He kept trying to get Bill to explain his vision and clarify Microsoft Mobile strategy in a competitive market and to me, it just came across as Bill just not getting it. At all. I mean, hey, Bill's the richest guy on the planet, not me... so you can be the judge who really gets it. But in this case, I think he's being as short sighted as the original version of The Road Ahead which if you remember, forgot to mention the Internet... in 1995.

What was Duck Typing again?

Duck Typing is a powerful feature included primarily in newer languages. It provides the following capability: An object having all the methods described in an interface can be made to implement that interface dynamically at runtime, even if the objects class does not include the interface in its implements clause.
This is actually a somewhat restricted definition of Duck Typing compared to other languages. But it is the one I have chosen because it is the one I believe fits best with Javas design philosophy of having API contracts explicitly specified in interfaces up-front.
The good news is that although this feature is not built into the Java language, it turns out to be quite easy to implement.

The boss button is back

Here's a great application that fits in perfectly with the theme of this page. It's called Ghostzilla; http://www.ghostzilla.com/ . The idea is that you want to surf the web, but have it look like you are doing normal work to people walking by your computer. Ghostzilla is a browser that hides itself in your normal work applications, like Excel, or Word, or Visual Studio... anything. With a swish of the mouse, Ghostzilla pops up and you can surf the web. If you see someone coming, simply move the mouse away, and it disappears, leaving no trace. Plus, you can easily configure it to use the shunnel as described here, for total privacy! "
